The Taiwan Expedition and new perspectives on Japanese imperialism and the Meiji Restoration
Robert Eskildsen Senior Associate Professor, Department of History,
International Christian University will talk about 1874 Japanese
government expedition sent to southern Taiwan ostensibly to punish
indigenous villagers who had murdered dozens of people from Ryu kyu .
Contemporary records show that the Japanese government also intended to
establish colonies in southern and eastern Taiwan and it justified its
colonial intent based on the argument that a state must spread
civilization and political authority to territories where it claimed
sovereignty. Because it took place in the context of the unequal treaty
system in East Asia and during the contentious early years in the Meiji
period, the expedition shows that Japanese imperialism developed in a
dynamic relationship with Western imperialism and it emerged as part of
the process of consolidating government power in Japan after the Meiji
Restoration.

Baye McNeil “Perpetual Gaijin: On Being the Other at Home and Abroad” Lecture and QA
Baye McNeil has been “other” all of his life. Growing up in America in
the 1970s in an environment where the Pan-African / Black Power movement
was strong, Baye was indoctrinated into activism from a very young age.
But by the time he was an adult, a life of activism and “otherization”
in America had taken its toll and he sought a new environment.
Ironically, it was as a Black man in Japan–struggling under the Japanese
brand of “otherization”–that he began to embrace the activism of his
youth as an indelible part of who he was. In this presentation, Baye
will discuss race, perception, and how he overcame obstacles to find
himself abroad, embracing the desire to make a difference and to have a
positive impact on society. It is Baye’s firm belief that everyone has
the potential (and the responsibility) to be a part of the change the
world needs now.
Cost: 3,000 yen
How to Apply: If you are interested in attending this session, send a
request to info@sunandmoon.jp with the workshop title in the subject.
