Connecting the World through Yoga: A Journey in Lebanon with Eiko Minami
Sun and Moon Academy:東五反田3-16-44 五反田山勝ビル 2F, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo
Lebanon has the highest number of refugees per host population of any country in the world. For more than five years, Eiko Minami has worked with NGOs to provide humanitarian assistance to displaced persons in the Middle East. She invited a yoga specialist to offer a workshop at a displaced persons camp in Lebanon, and it was the first experience of yoga for those living at the camp. What was this experience like for them? In this charity event, Eiko will share her experiences of working with Syrian and Palestinian refugees. Through her presentation and an interactive program, we can begin to think about and feel their experience more deeply.
Eiko will return to the middle east to continue this work next month.
Talk is in Japanese and English by the speaker.
Cost: 2000 yen
Proceeds will be donated to the charitable organization “Tools for Inner Peace,” which offers volunteer yoga workshops in Bekaa Valley, Lebanon, where 800,000 Syrian refugees live in unofficial refugee camps.

Nuclear, Panic, and Danger: Why Fear of Nuclear Threatens Japan’s Energy, Environmental, and National Security
As we reflect on the eighth anniversary of the Fukushima disaster, a consensus has formed among experts that fear of nuclear has created far more harm than the radiation itself. Michael Shellenberger will build on these factors to offer a unified picture of the danger created by nuclear panic, its motivations, and what to do about it. He will present evidence showing how widespread fear of nuclear energy within Japanese society reflects a displaced and often unconscious fear of nuclear weapons, anxieties over nuclear-armed North Korea and newly aggressive China and Russia, and uncertainties with regard to U.S. nuclear security guarantees. Resolving the continuing conflict within Japan over nuclear energy will ultimately require resolving domestic tensions over what kind of economic, military, and political power Japan should and will become in the 21st century.

Admission: 1,000 yen (Students: 500 yen, IHJ members: free) (reservations required)
Language: English
Prof. Huffman will discuss what he has learned while studying the Meiji urban poor, including what they can teach us about human survival, the light they shed on capitalism, the insights they provide into class relationships, and how Japanese attitudes toward poverty have changed across the last century. He will also reflect on questions about the broader nature of history, such as why vast segments of people are omitted from standard histories and how that omission distorts our view of the past.

‘Welcome Refugees’: A Case Study on Community Mobilisation and Refugee Advocacy in the UK
Speaker: Dr Carlos Gigoux (Department of Sociology, University of Essex)
Place: Sophia University, Yotsuya Campus; Bldg. 10, room 301
This seminar brings together ethnographic data in order to highlight the role and impact of grassroot community groups in the campaign Welcome Refugees and in the implementation of the SVPRP in Essex. It suggests that these community groups, often excluded from public funding, not only provide a useful service for refugees by mediating access to services but they develop necessary initiatives that facilitate social integration and community cohesion for both refugees and their host societies while creating new forms of knowledge production on rights, cosmopolitanism and multiculturalism. By examining their experiences, networks, strategies, limitations and challenges it is possible to formulate a blueprint for refugee support and migration research. Finally, the seminar will pay particular attention to the strategic partnership developed between Universities and community groups supporting refugees.

Tokyo Jukujo: Middle-aged Sex Workers in Contemporary Japan
Once viewed as pariahs in Japan’s sex industry, women in their forties through sixties entered the mainstream in the 2000’s when enterprising managers saw an opportunity to capitalize on their growing economic vulnerability and marketed them as “jukujo” [mature or ripe women].
This talk examines the expansion of the sex industry to encompass middle-aged women who work long-term due to the dearth of social safety nets. Based on in-depth interviews with sex workers and managers, I consider the choices of women to become sex workers in the context of contemporary Japanese politics, that is to say, the prioritization of corporate welfare over social welfare and the production the largest gendered wage disparity relative to other industrial countries.
This talk is organized by Professor David H. SLATER (FLA)
Lecture in English / No RSVP required

Mental Health Matters - A Solo Run For TELL Around Lake Kasumigaura
Life in Japan can be isolating for foreigners, especially those without much Japanese language skills. Coping alone with mental health issues and trying to find help in a new country with language and cultural barriers is a daunting task. Particularly in Japan, mental health help in English is hard to find, options limited, expensive, and often not covered by health insurance.
This was the position I found myself in 2013: new in Japan, without Japanese language skills, in a challenging and demanding professional situation, and crippled by clinical depression that began in 2010.
Right from the beginning of my days in Japan and through many difficult days/nights, I was supported by humane and non-judgmental TELL lifeline telephone counselors. I was lucky. I recovered, am healthy, and giving my best to living life to its full potential.
I felt it is time to give back to TELL, Japan which helped me, is helping many like me AND IS SAVING LIVES.
DATE OF THE RUN:  27-April-2019 to  1-May-2019
PLACE:   Lake Kasumigaura, Ibaraki, Japan
