Or connect Kyal, kyal@placetogrow-ngo.org.
SR: Please tell me a little bit about the event:
AO: We aim to deliver stockings to 1500 children and have over 500 residents participate in team-building holiday events held in 8 towns along the eastern Tohoku coastline. The main event is December 16th (Sun) , at Hotel Kanyo in Minami Sanriku. We will be having a smaller scale events at the following communities too. Which all involve the distribution of stockings to kids.
12/8 (Sat) Fukushima
12/15 (Sat) Christmas Tree lighting and Santa Soul Train in Utatsu in MinamiSanriku
12/15 (Sat) Cycling Santa Stocking Dropoff at Kesennuma Asobiba
We expect this year’s Santa Soul Train will cost over 3 million yen and require 100 volunteers.
SR: WHAT IS A PLACE TO GROW?
AO: Place To Grow is a nonprofit that “grows” communities! The signature project, Santa Soul Train, is in its 8th year of bringing Hope, Fun and friendships to marginalized communities. Through the monthly workshops for children in Miyagi and Fukushima, volunteers facilitate collaborations between schools & company volunteers from across japan. These bring together upwards of 500 people and impact hundreds more.
SR: What can people do to help?
AO: 1) Sponsor a holiday stocking for 3000yen 2) join the Santa soul train to support emotional healing in post 3.11 regions. 3) make a Donation to support the Santa Soul Train

Knights in White Lycra (KIWL)SANTA RIDE (see photos)
Saturday December 15: Cycle 70kms to a care home, dress as Santa and give presents & Xmas cheer to the excited kids. Contact: info@kiwl.net Find out more: https://www.kiwl.net/https://www.kiwl.net/
INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT WILLIAMS - FOUNDER OF KIWL
SR: Please tell me a little bit about the event:
RW: KIWL members are cycling from Shinjuku to Mitake, near Okutama on Saturday December 15th to visit a local children's home dressed as Santa's to play with the kids and give out presents. It’s organized by Mirai no Mori, a nonprofit working with such marginalised children.
SR: How did you start?
RW: I started the Knights in White Lycra in 2012 with a few other British friends when we were sat in a pub drinking beer, looking at our huge bellies. We wanted to do something about our own health while also doing some good for others. The tragedy of 3/11 was still fresh in our mind so we trained and rode 270kms to Minami-Soma in 2013 to raise funds. The elation of completing the ride and the emotion of meeting the survivors really gave us the motivation to make it an annual event.
SR: Why do you continue to do it?
RW: There are many reasons why I love running KIWL. The most rewarding is to see the groups for whom we raise funds put it all to good work. I have seen at first hand the positive impact Mirai no Mori camps have on the children who are often emotionally scarred and unable to see positive possibilities. They learn to overcome fear, build self-confidence and learn skills they can take into life beyond institutional care. The other big motivator for me is to see participants transform into someone capable of riding 500kms in 4 days and achieve something they never thought they could possibly do. Our motto is 'get fit and give back'. Now we have other events: marathon running, walking, golf, futsal, and social events.
SR: How can other people get involved?
RW: People can donate directly to the group we support, Mirai no Mori, https://mirai-no-mori.jp/get-involved/ or volunteer with them for their various activities. KIWL always seeks participants for our events too, www.kiwl.net

A new group called Tokyo Good Karma has just been launched on facebook and it's a forum where people and businesses can do good deeds for others, without the expectation of anything in return. The aim is to make a positive impact within the community and promote generosity, by offering posts for free. The sort of content that Tokyo Good Karma hopes to attract are posts offering free - expertise to others; give away samples from companies; tickets to events; household goods or clothes; lessons; craft goods; business and service recommendations; and giveaways and offers from restaurants, bars, cafes, stores, hotels, and businesses which in turn will create goodwill and promote their services. If the posts are of interest, then all that other group members have to do is respond and connect.

PR/marketing internship opportunity
SKY Labo (Skylabo.org) is an exciting, new Japanese-founded non-profit aiming to decrease in the STEM gender gap.  It organizes a bilingual summer STEM workshop for female Japanese mid/high school students.  They are looking for a PR/marketing person or company to work with them to reach the Japanese audience (students, parents of students etc.) for the workshop.   The bulk of marketing/PR work would be late January to July.
Skylabo is still small and they are in the process of increasing their network of funders – therefore their budget is very limited as they grow their reach. They would love to hear from people would believe in their mission who could offer pro-bono or  “low-bono” PR/marketing skills for the next event.
Will report to a Japanese manager in Japan, so English skills not required, but a definite bonus.

Get fit? Have fun? Meet interesting people? AND make a difference? Sounds too good to be true... Welcome to the world of PLOGGING, the eco-friendly exercise phenomenon that is sweeping the globe. What is PLOGGING? A combination of "JOGGING" and "PLOCKA UPP" (which means "to pick up" in Swedish) - is a simple concept: jogging while picking up litter. The eco-friendly workout is a more comprehensive form of exercise, requiring bending and arm movements to pick up garbage while running. 30 mins of plogging burns 288 calories, compared to 235 calories from regular jogging... So what more reason could you possibly need to join Japan's Plogging movement? *For those of you who aren't keen runners: you don't have to run. You can also walk, enjoy a stroll with your dog, spend quality time with the kids, etc. The main thing is to have a good time, connect with interesting people, and make a tiny weeny difference on a Saturday morning. In April, we held Japan's first-ever Plog. Read about it here: https://bit.ly/2RbUnhx Video on Plogging: https://goo.gl/94me5d
