VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
Earth Day Beach Cleanup in Shonan needs 250 volunteers and new sponsors for Spring Fujisawa Beach Cleaning Project 2011
Come join us on April 17th for the Earth Day Beach Clean-up in Shonan! The Fujisawa Beach Cleaning Project is a chance for local and foreign communities to do good together and feel good while giving back to the community. It involves a beach cleanup at Kugenuma Kaigan in Fujisawa, and a light buffet aperitif after at Soleil Provence for networking.
The Fujisawa Beach Cleaning Project is a community initiative that is designed to bring foreigners and locals together to do good in a fun, family-oriented and tangible way. The initiative involves a large community beach cleanup, twice a year in spring and in fall.  The Fall cleanup is part of the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup initiative and all debris collected is surveyed and reported in a national and international report on the state of the coastal ecosystem. The Spring cleanup is way to commemorate Earth Day.
Each beach cleanup also includes a training orientation for clean-up team leaders. This is so that everyone knows what to do on the day and why. The cleanup begins at 10:00 and ends at 12:30. After the debris is sorted and counted, all volunteers and sponsors are invited to get to know one another and to discuss the day's events during a light buffet with drinks and refreshments.
Since the Project began in 2009, over 700 volunteers have participated and have removed over 150 bags of litter from the beach. That's about 300 kg!!! This year, with your help, we hope to double that.
All debris collected during the beach cleaning will be recorded for a national report on Japan's beaches. Creative and fun clean-up pledges are welcome. So if you or your group have one in mind then just let us know when you register.  Also feel free to bring gloves or recycled plastic bags for collecting the garbage. Volunteers will receive a Fujisawa Beach Cleaning Project T-shirt* when they check in at the registration desk. (*while supplies last).
New sponsorships and donation opportunities are now available. For more information, please feel free to contact Alana Bonzi at alana.bonzi@gmail.com
