May 2017

Thanks to everyone who supported the many events and marches over the last few months. There are many others coming up as well as a activist resources listing at the end; I would like to highlight just a few - please see below for details and links.
  • The Japanese Women Leadership Initiative is an amazing Fellowship opportunity for Japanese women to become leaders and to make positive social change - JWLI is accepting applications for the 2017 program through May 8.
  • Mirai no Mori is looking for a bilingual part-time staff member to coordinate volunteers and support programs. Info is in English is below - but you can also get info here in Japanese https://www.tvac.or.jp/sagasu/40883
  • Refugees International Japan has 4 events this month - one of them is bound to interest you.
  • Activist events and tools have been added to the end of the listing. There are many resources  to use after the Winter/Spring 2017 marches - these have been great entry points for many new people. There are many other ways to get involved.
On a personal note, I am happy to be working the San Francisco-based Give2Asia Foundation again, working on developing sustainable CSR programs for international companies in Japan. For something a bit different -  I will start a new course on Social Issues through Drama course at Temple University in May - there are 4 or 5 spots as still available.

The volunteer coordinator works with relevant committees to develop and implement a strategic volunteer management system that meets Mirai no Mori needs. The coordinator also is responsible for recruiting, scheduling, managing and acknowledging volunteers from diverse group with both English and Japanese speakers.

Assess the needs of each committee: Camp team, PR outreach, Fundraising, Program development and then

After a few months filled with about 10 marches, there are many other things we need to to bring about social change.

Many are moving into another phase of involvement and anyone can join! Really! if you #gimme20min each day of concrete targeted action, you can make the world a better place.

Many organizations use letters writing and phone calling to pressure their government at the local and federal levels. There are also several networks focused on getting people to use their economic power as consumers.

Here is a 3-page handout i made for a global campaign more than 10 years ago. the Japanese version was one of the first just tip sheets in Japanese for doing a letter writing campaign.
